Eldridge Sherman (14), 1844-1926
Catherine Elizabeth Earl (14), 1845-1927

1844. Feb 1st, Eldridge born in Scipio Township Seneca County.

1850. Eldridge lived with his parents in Pleasant Township Seneca County.

1861/65. Civil War: Sep 25 1861 at age 17 he enlisted for 3 years in Company G 55th OH Vol Inf, suffered a severe shoulder wound at Gettysburg PA in 1863, discharged Jan 22 1864. Eldridge served in the same Company with his first cousin Samuel Sherman, the son of Zephaniah Sherman. Eldridge Sherman of Seneca County was shot and wounded at the stone wall the first day in the Battle of Gettysburg.

1870. US Census of Clinton Township Seneca County OH indicated: Eldridge Sherman age 26, farmer; Catherine Sherman age 25; William Sherman age 2; James May age 15, male, works on farm.

1870. The OH Census of Clinton Township adds the following: Value of real estate $2,200; value of personal property $700; land, 35 acres improved & 16 acres unimproved; cash value of farm $2,500; cash value of farm implements & machinery $30; $60 wages paid during the year; 2 horses; 2 milch cows; 3 other cattle; 50 sheep; 7 swine; value of all livestock $385; produce by bushel, winter wheat 200, indian corn 100 & oats 112.

1870. US Census of Scipio Township Seneca County OH was a puzzle, as the 2nd entry was inaccurate. If it was Francis (male) it should also show his wife Lucinda who he married in 1868. It seems possible that the entry Frances (female) age 25 keeping house should have been Hulda age 47, as she was not found elsewhere and her three daughters are there. There are several other possibilities as well. Nevertheless, the census indicated one family and shown below as recorded: Eldridge Sherman age 26, farmer; Francis Sherman age 25, female, keeping house; Ferona age 22, without occupation; Elnora age 17, at home; Lucinda age 12, at home. [This was quite likely at Howland & Hulda's home].

1870. The OH census of Scipio Township adds the following: Value of real estate $2,000; value of personal property $900; land, 50 acres improved and unimproved not shown; value of farm $2,000; value of farm implements $75; wages paid $25; 6 horses; 8 milch cows; 6 other cattle; 30 sheep; 10 swine; value of livestock $900; produce by the bushel, wheat 200, indian corn 300, oats 200; 150 lbs of wool; 40 bushels of potatoes; orchard produce $100; 800 lbs of butter; 20 tons of hay; 20 gallons of Molasses; value of animals slaughtered $300; estimated value of all farm produce $1,175.

1872. May 2nd, Eldridge & Francis Sherman bought 80 acres in Adams Township Seneca County OH (E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 31). Eldridge sold his half to Francis on Apr 3 1879.

Most of the early Seneca County Shermans attended this Methodist Church and many were buried there, and a number of their descendants are currently members.
