Elihu G Sherman (14), 1837-1865
Bridget Ann Heabern (14), 1831-19091831. Bridget Ann Heabern was born 15 November in Ireland, her parents were John Heabern and Rosana S Lyman.
Note: Bridget's last name was spelled many different ways on most documents: Hevner, Heverson, Heaverson, Hevenon, Hiviner, Heiver and Haver. Her given named varied as well: Bridget, Betsey, Eliz and Margaret. The only constant was the "A" or "Ann" when shown. The above spelling is used for lack of better choice. 1837. Elihu Sherman was born in Norwich Twp, Oxford County, Ontario.
1847. Bridget Ann Heabern age 16, immigrated from Ireland to Canada.
1851. Census indicated Elihu age 14 lived with parents.
1851. Census of Norwich Twp, Oxford County, Ontario indicated: Eliz Hevner age 19, single born Ireland, no occupation (unconfirmed that this is Bridget). She was counted with the Webster family, also living there was Isaac Sherman son of Elihu's father's brother David Sherman. Isaac's mother had died and the children were scattered.
1854. Elihu and Bridget Ann were married on 13 October both lived in Norwich Twp.
1861. Census of East Oxford County, Ontario indicated: Elihu age 24 farmer, Bridget age 29, William age 3, lived in a one story framed house.
1862. Elihu Sherman bought 120 acres in Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan from John and Julia Turner of Cleveland Ohio for $420 on 5 February.
1862. Elihu and Bridget sold 60 acres of the above land to his brother William R Sherman on 14 March.
1864. Elihu Sherman was drafted at Car Michigan on 12 September for one year.
Elihu Sherman's Military Time 1866. Bridget Sherman widow, made application number 115,214 for a pension on 29 December. With the application there were the following affidavits from neighbors stating they were acquainted with Elihu, Bridget and their family: (1) 4 Jan 1867 Mrs Nancy White and Mrs Emeline Sherman, (2) 4 Jan 1867 Mrs James Turner and Mrs Caroline J Hier and (3) 7 Jan 1867 Mrs Lucy Hutton and Cordelia Dickerson. National Archives Pension Number 889795.
1870. Census of Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan indicated: Bridget Sherman age 39, keeping house, $1,200 real and $280 personal property, 3 children under 10 years of age.
1871. Bridget Sherman age 40 married Huron Hallock age 39, farmer at Watertown Twp.
1871. Betsey Sherman Hallock purchased cemetery lot 373 in the Old Watertown Cemetery near Foster Michigan.
1875. Mrs B A Hallock owned the same 60 acres in Watertown Twp her husband purchased in 1862. Also H Hallock owned 40 acres in Watertown Twp, possibly her second husband.
1878. In Alden Sherman's will he gave "Margaret, my son's widow $90.00 owed him by his son Elihu" (assumed that this is what Alden called Bridget).
1880. Census of Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan indicated: Bridget Sherman age 49, "grass widow" married, keeping house: Charles Sherman age 22 son, single, farmer: Mary A Sherman age 18, single: Loretta A Sherman age 15, single. Location of Huron Hallock is unknown.
1885. Huron Hallock died at Watertown Twp on 5 May. He is buried in the Old Watertown Cemetery (one reference shows 1895).
1888. Bridget still owned the same 60 acres.
1900. Census of Fremont Twp, Village of Mayville indicated: Bridget Sherman age 69, widow, born Oct 1830, mother of 3, 2 living, could read and speak but not write English. She was a roomer in the Fox household.
1901. Bridget Sherman requested restoration of her pension, revised status on 27 June. Bridget signed with her "X" mark, in the original 1866 application she had signed her name. Her pension was restored, and last monthly payment of $12 was paid to her 4 September 1909. The pension was canceled on 2 December 1909 due to her death.
1902. Bridget Sherman's 60 acre farm, plus 20 acres to the South, was owned by Jno Atkins.
1905. Mrs B A Sherman is visiting her daughter Mrs Jno Atkins at Marlette this week.
1909. Bridget Sherman died on 1 December. She is buried in the Old Watertown Cemetery, her marker indicated born 15 Nov 1831, died 1 Dec 1909, wife of Elihu Sherman.
Three children of Elihu and Bridget Sherman 1. Charles William Sherman (15), born 7 November 1859 in Canada. 1861 Census indicated he lived with his parents at age 3, 1870 census lived with his mother at age 11, 1880 census lived with his mother at age 22. He died 11 September 1903 and is buried in his mothers lot at the Old Watertown Cemetery. 2. Mary Ann Sherman (15), born 18 February 1862 in Michigan. 1870 census indicated she lived with her mother at age 8, 1880 census lived with her mother at age 18. She apparently died prior to 1900 no other records located. 3. Loretta "Retta" Alice Sherman (15)
1864. She was born 12 December, she was called Alice Sherman and Lorette Sherman.
1870. Census indicated she lived with her mother at age 5.
1880. Census lived with her mother at age 15.
1885. She married John W Atkins.
1888. They lived in Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan.
1900. Census of Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan indicated: John Atkins age 33, farmer born July 1866 in Michigan, father born in Canada, mother in New York owns farm with mortgage: Retta A Atkins age 34, wife: three children age under age 12: Sarah P Atkins age 58 mother, farm laborer, born December 1841 in Michigan, father born in New York, mother born in Germany: Emmaual Bodice age 19, hired man and farm laborer.
1906. John Atkins renewed an insurance policy with the Tuscola County Mutual Fire Insurance Company on 29 May.
1906. Mrs J W Atkins of Marlette was called her Monday to attend her mother Mrs B Sherman who is ill.

1910. Census of Marlette Village, Sanilac County, Michigan indicated: John Atkins age 44, father born in Ireland, mother in New York and Loretta Atkins age unclear.
1911. Lee Atkins received word from his parents Mr & Mrs J W Atkins that they are about to leave Lindley, near Los Angeles, for a visit at Salt Lake City. They will then head home for Michigan and are expected home in a few weeks. Their stay in California has been very enjoyable.
1911. J W Atkins of Marlette gives free moving picture shows every night in his big new store at that place.
1912. J W Atkins of Marlette a former resident here and whose illness has been often mentioned was taken to Harper Hospital at Detroit for treatment.
1911. J W Atkins of Marlette continues to improve at Harper Hospital at Detroit which will be good news to his friends here. Before coming home he will undergo another operation.
