1863. On 22 may William H Sherman was born in Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan (from his parent's bible). He was called "Willie" and his father called "William."

1867. Jane "Janie" E Gunn, William's first wife was born in June in Canada.

1867. Martha Jane Hutton, William's third wife was born in Town of Chili, Monroe County, New York.

1869. Eliza Jane Lamb, William's second wife was born in Zimmerman, Ontario.

1870. Census of Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan indicated: William Sherman age 7 lived at home.

1880. Census of Watertown Twp, Tuscola County, Michigan indicated: William Sherman age 17 lived at home.

1886. On 5 July Willie Sherman was witnesses to the marriage of his sister Emma Jane Sherman to George William.

1887. William H Sherman married first to Jane Gunn.

190x. William farmed just North of Fostoria on the Fostoria Rd, just South of the Millington Road. The farm house was beautifully landscaped. Willie probably rented the 199 acre farm originally and later bought it from W S Tompkins. 39 acres with house on West side of Fostoria Road and 160 acres across the road. Willie was very deaf and did not visit much.

1900. Census of Marathon Twp, Lapeer County, Michigan indicated: William age 36 farmer, rents farm, Jane Sherman age 32 wife, born in Canada, both parents born in Canada, Milman Sherman age 12 son, born in MI, Elma Sherman age 5 daughter born in MI, William and Jane were married 13 years, she had 3 children, 2 living.

1908. Doctor Seeley went to Detroit Saturday with Mrs Willie Sherman of Watertown who was operated upon at a Hospital there.

1908. Particularly sad was the death of Mrs Willie Sherman of Watertown, which occurred at Detroit Saturday, where she went for an operation, soon after which she passed away. The remains were brought home on Monday, and the funeral services were conducted at the house yesterday afternoon by Reverend Exelby of Mayville. She was 40 years old and leaves a husband and four children.

1909. On 7 October William Sherman age 46 married Eliza Lamb at Mayville, age 40, her first marriage, his second, both from Fostoria, her parents are Nathaniel Lamb and Anna Husband.

1910. Census of Watertown Twp indicated: William age 66, farmer, owned farm free of debt, Jennie Sherman age 40 wife, they have been married 6 months, her and both parents born in Canada, Elta Sherman, daughter age 9.

1911. Geo Lamb of Chicago and Mrs McFerran of Milton Ontario are visiting their sister Mrs W H Sherman.

1911. Mrs W H Sherman passed away at her home in Watertown on Friday, 2 June after a lingering illness. She was a patient sufferer and through all her weeks of suffering not a murmur was heard. She was faithful member of the church, and just as faithful in believing it was her duty as a Christian to do the will of her Master at all times and to lend a helping hand.

 

Jennie Lamb was born in Nelson Twp, Ontario 6 Aug 1869. She left an orphan at an early age. She has since lived in various places but mostly made her home with her married sister until the marriage to W H Sherman on 7 Oct 1909. Over a year ago the hand of destiny was laid over her, for a time it was hoped she would recover, but she was soon known to be beyond human aid.

Although an intense sufferer, when she knew she could not recover and became reconciled and always have the affliction with calm Christian fortitude, sending that she would soon be with ___ which is for the better. She leaves beside the sorrowing husband and family two sisters and three brothers. One sister is Mrs John Foster of Mayville.

Funeral was held from the home near Fostoria on Monday, services being conducted by the pastor Reverend E C C Benson.

 

1911. The funeral of Mrs William Sherman took place at the home Monday 5 June. Interment was in Watertown Cemetery. Mr Sherman certainly has had his share of bereavement, and the family has the sympathy of their many friends.

1911. Mrs W D McFerran of Milton Ontario was called here by the death of here sister Mrs W H Sherman.

1912. Will Sherman returned Monday from Saginaw where he had been to see his little daughter who's in a hospital in that city ill with diphtheria. She was better when he left.

192x. W H Sherman owned 80 acres in Watertown Twp. 40 acres on each side of Fostoria Road.

xxxx. William married the third time to a woman named Martha Jane Hutton, she is mentioned in the 1920 census, and as his widow in 1940.

1920. Census of Watertown Twp indicated William age 56, farmer, Martha H Sherman age 52 born 1868 in NY, parents born in England, child Alta.

1935. W Sherman owned the same 80 acres above minus 4 acres for a cemetery. The main barn was built in 1888, 48' x 50' x 16'. A wood frame house was built in 1890 and remodeled in 1928.

1940. On 11 Apr William H Sherman died at Fostoria MI of cardiac insufficiency, and another problem was hypertension. Left widow Martha age 72.

 

His obituary indicated he died at his home, and the funeral was to be 2pm Saturday 13 April at his home. He was a farmer and spent all his life near Fostoria. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Fostoria. He left his wife, son Milman Sherman, daughter Alta Calling of MtMorris, daughter Alma Richards of Saginaw, brother David Sherman of Flint, sister Emma Petterson of Flint, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Buried 14 Apr 1940 in old Watertown Cemetery, probably in lot 263, which he is the recorded owner. There are no names recorded by the Twp as being buried there, records reportedly stolen by a mad father because his son, the Twp clerk lost the election for another term. There are no headstones in lot 263 as of 1999, "W H Sherman" is inscribed on the cement border of the lot, the unnumbered small lot just West of lot 263 has "W,H,S." inscribed on two corner posts.

 

1940. Milman Sherman was administrator for the William H Sherman estate. His estimated estate was $4,000 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property. His heirs were his widow and children.

1940. After her husbands death Martha Jane Sherman returned to NY and lived with relatives.

1951. Martha died in Rochester County, NY, buried in North Chili Rural Cemetery, North Chili NY.

1887. He was born in June in Watertown Twp, his obit said 24 Jul 1888.

1897. He attended Tubbs School.

1900. Milman lived at home at age 12.

1905. Milman is attending the duties of Wesley Roy, as night watchman of the Pere Marquette, the latter has a bad case of blood poisoning on his hand.

1908. On 10 Jun Milman age 20, occupation railroading, married Kittie Crawford age 18.

1910. Census of Saginaw indicated: Milman age 25, Kate age 20, wife.

1911. M Sherman was called to Fostoria from Saginaw to attend the funeral of his mother.

1920. Census of Saginaw indicated Milman Sherman age 30, railroad engineer, Florence Sherman, wife, age 23, born 1897 in MI, father born in OH and mother in MI, daughter Dorothy P Sherman.

1932. Milman married Mildred Diamond.

1944. Mildred Diamond died.

1965. Milman died 13 Aug 1965 at Saginaw, he worked for C&O Railway 50 years, buried Oakwood Mausoleum.

1910. Census showed Alma age 15 servant girl, counted with the Walt Gawne household.

1911. On 7 Feb Alma married Perry Richards born 26 Sep 1893 in Reed City MI

1912. Mrs Percy Richards was called to Fostoria from Saginaw to attend her mothers funeral.
