Elihu Sherman (12), 1777-1841
Hannah Russell (12), 1775-1855/601775. Hannah Russel was born at Swanzey MA, her parents were Elijah Russel and Hannah Brayton, who married in the Quaker Church on 25 ) October 1764. She was of Irish and Scottish descent.
1777. Elihu Sherman was born in Rochester MA in Plymouth County, exact date of birth unknown, baptized December 1777 in the Second Church of Rochester in Mattapoisett MA in Plymouth County.
1797. Elihu Sherman and Hannah Russel were married on 22 August in Dartmouth MA in Bristol County, after marriage they resided in the vicinity of Mattapoisett MA in Plymouth County.
1800/4. Birth records written in the family Bible for the first four children of Elihu and Hannah were lost when their Bible burned in a fire.
1806. About this time Elihu and family reportedly moved to New Bedford MA in Bristol County where Elihu was engaged in cod fishing and was captain over a fleet of boats.
1810. Census of Dartmouth Twn/Twp Bristol County indicates an Elihu Sherman family.
1812. During the war of 1812 the British destroyed all of the fishing boats that had been under the command of Captain Elihu Sherman. He was not able to recover from the loss financially and was forced to retire from the seafaring business.
xxxx. For a few years after the war of 1812 Elihu was Sheriff in the town of New Bedford in Bristol county.
1814/6. Elihu and family living in Bedford MA, Middlesex County near Boston.
1818. Elihu and family migrated to the "Quaker Basin" near what later became DeRuyter NY in Madison County, and lived with her cousins who migrated a few years before.
xxxx. Elihu bought 150 acres of farm land for $442 in DeRuyter Twp Madison County New York. In 1894 there were no Sherman's in this area.
1820. A land agent showed Elihu a 50 acre farm in Cayuga NY, located about 2 ½ miles SE of Aurora NY, identified as lot #56. Elihu sold the land at DeRuyter at a gain and moved to Cayuga County. They moved there with first privilege to purchase, see 1821 below. The farm was near what was then a thriving hamlet called Moonshine NY in Scipio Twp. Moonshine is in the middle of lot #55. Moonshine was very small consisting of a couple of mills and few houses.
1820-40. Neither Elihu or son Alden appeared in the Quaker records.
1821. Elihu Sherman purchased the farm for $2,500 and lived there until he died. The farm stayed in the family for over sixty years. A photograph of the farm house exists.
1830. Census of Ledyard Twn/Twp (formerly Scipio) in Cayuga County NY indicated an Elihu Sherman and family.
1840. Census of Ledyard Twn/Twp in Cayuga County NY indicated an Elihu Sherman and family.
1840. Elihu Sherman prepared his will on 13th of April.
1841. Elihu Sherman died in Ledyard NY. His will was approved 26 July 1841 and exact burial location unknown, probably buried with his son Russell.
1850. Census of Ledyard Twp in Cayuga County NY indicated Russell Sherman (Elihu's son) and his family. And Russell's Mother Hannah Sherman age 68 (widow).
1855. The NY State Census indicated Hannah Sherman not shown with her son Russell Sherman.
1859/60. Hannah Sherman died. Probably buried in Howland cemetery in an unmarked grave. No probate records found.
